The Kids' Hospital Network

The "Bearable Times" Kids & Teens Club website was designed and created for the purpose of bringing children, families, and professionals together. This website is provided by The Kids' Hospital Network, which believes through love, support, and understanding we all can make a difference! Those individuals accessing our website are to be courteous and respectful of our Club and within our other online community programs Shadows on the Shore (SHOSH),"It's All Right!" (IAR) and special pages created by Alexis Brown and her volunteer staff and our international liaison Greet Meesen of Studio Macadam. While we encourage Kids and Teens to be creative and have fun, we reserve the right NOT print any material we find offensive and we will not tolerate disrespectful behavior. Adults are to remember to post ONLY in appropriate areas and are responsible for their own actions! Those individuals acquiring resources or links for information on our website do so at their own discretion. We are NOT responsible for advertisement, comments, or personal views which may be found on these pages. We do not endorse links or advertisements on these pages.

Parents/Grandparents/Teachers/Tutors/Child Life Providers should at all times SUPERVISE their children/students/clients while online and set guidelines for their safety while surfing the net! Computers should be placed in rooms that allow adults to monitor their children/students time online - computer screens should be visible from a teacher's desk or centered in the room. At home it's best if computers are set up in the kitchen or family room or den- a "public room" NOT in a child's bedroom. If the child suffers from a chronic illness or is recovering from surgery, an area in the "public room" of the home should be made to accommodate this child. Bring in a daybed or a comfy chair and ottoman for the child to work from. We believe children have a right to privacy online but parents need to be aware of the dangers online. If your child is spending lots of time on the computer chatting/emailing and you noticed a changed in his/her behavior, parents should definitely intervene. Parents need to protect their children from online predators and potential dangerous situations. Talking to children/students about the Internet, having discussions about both the good and bad facts will keep them safe online. Most importantly parents need to get online themselves - take a course at a local HS or College. Set up a family computer support group in their neighborhood and meet weekly or monthly and share concerns, information and resources or assist in Tech Nights at their child's school.

The Kids' Hospital Network is NOT responsible or liable for other Kids, Teens, or Adults, nor are we for their misconduct, views, or opinions; including E-mails, postings, online chats, etc.! Inappropriate emails, postings, and chats should be reported immediately to TKHN and to the families, school, rehab center's internet service provider (ISP) and if warranted their Police Department. Children should NEVER give out personal information without their parents/guardians permission. NEVER NEVER give out your password(s) to anyone! It is wise for young children to share an email account with a parent. Children should also be aware of viruses and not download from sites without having a virus protection software loaded on their computer and permission to download, nor should they open any emails from people they do not know. Update your virus protection software often. Many families are using cable modems or DSL, please remember to shut down your internet connection when you are not using the web -this will protect your computer from hackers lurking online. A Firewall installed on your computer will also cut down on someone looking around your files. Keep all important information stored on disks and not on your CPU.
